Jesse Turner Scholarship Fund

A man’s passion for the game of golf will stay on the greens forever. That’s all thanks to one former student and her family who have chosen to begin the first ever Jesse Turner Go Girl’s Golf Memorial Scholarship Fund.

“I don’t want him to be forgotten for his good work. I don’t want people to not realize and understand that he had a heart for children and he had a heart for people, period. He loves to help people through the goodness of God and the goodness of what they can do. It brings me joy. It brings me happiness but there is sadness in there as well because I’m missing him but this scholarship is wonderful. It’s going to help students go to college. It’s going to keep the legacy going on.

Jesse Turner, who had strong ties in both Seguin and New Braunfels for his mentoring and coaching of area youth in golf was recently honored by both the city of New Braunfels and the city of Seguin. May 29th has been designated as the “Mr. Jesse Turner Day.” This day acknowledges Turner for unselfishly dedicating himself to helping youth since 1986. Much of his time was spent teaching golf to all kids especially the underprivileged youth.

Co-Founder of the scholarship is Delores Hagen. Hagen says she brought up the idea following Turner’s sudden death in August, 2020. She says the scholarship recognizes him for his impact on all children especially her daughter Brooke.

“My daughter went to Navarro High School and when she started as a freshman, she wanted to play athletics and she was interested in golf. Well, her dad and I know nothing about golf but I remembered someone I worked with Nancy Turner, she had talked about growing up, playing golf and her dad had taught her golf. So, when my daughter Brooke wanted to play golf, I went to Nancy (his daughter) one day at the hospital and I said, hey, do you think you can ask your dad cause they lived in New Braunfels and we lived there in Seguin, if he could help Brook with some golf lessons. So, Nancy approached her dad and at first, it was a very presumptuous flat ‘no.’ He’s like ‘no, I’m not going to do that. I’m retired and I’m not teaching anymore. I don’t want to do that and Nancy and Mrs. (Nancy) Turner said ‘no, no Jesse. This is a good opportunity for you. She’s a good kid and she needs help and she need to basically get out of the house and do something,” said Hagen.

Hagen says it was then that Turner decided to come out of retirement and help her daughter learn and compete in golf. She says he dedicated his time to her throughout the school years of 2014 to 2018.

“That prompted him to meet Brook at the golf course one Saturday morning and from then on, Mr. Turner and Brooke, they hit it off. At first, they butted heads a lot because they are both Type A personalities and Mr. Turner had a specific way of doing things and Brooke had a specific way of doing things but over the years, her freshman and sophomore, her junior, her senior year, they really became more than student and instructor. They became best friends and a mutual respect grew from there,”

“We are working on getting the word out and letting more people know about the scholarship so that we can provide more sponsorships.
